Maine

Getting to Maine

🚘 I definitely recommend having a car here. Whether you drive to the state or rent one when you arrive.

✈️ I flew to Bangor and then drove to Bar Harbor.

Our trip to Maine (2023)

*My most recent trip recap.*

Day 1:

We arrived late at night and drove straight to Bar Harbor to get settled in for the night.

Day 2:

We started the day bright and early with a classic American breakfast! We had scrambled eggs, toast, bacon, sausage, potatoes and pancakes. We then made our way to Acadia National Park. (Make sure you get a national park pass in advance!) There we drove around the park on "Park Loop Road" which we allowed 3 hours for, it is 27 miles total. Along the way we made stops at Thunder Hole, Jordan Pond and Cadillac Mountain which are all must do's in my opinion. Cadillac Mountain was spectacular to not only be able to see the view but learn about the history of the area as well. Be aware of the time of year you go to Cadillac Mountain for if vehicle reservations are required. We were there in October to see the fall foliage which is a very popular time of year for the area. Because of this, we weren't able to get a car reservation to see the sunrise or sunset. It was beautiful being able to drive around and see the leaves start to change color. We were there a week ahead of schedule and so we were able to see the start of the leaves changing. If we had more time, I would have loved to either bike or walk around on the carriage roads. I think it was be super cool to bike around Acadia.

For dinner we headed to Geddy's which had not only great seafood but other menu options as well if you are not in a seafood person in a seafood loving party.

Day 3:

On our second full day of Bar Harbor we spent a mix of time walking around Bar Harbor , seeing  the shops, and going on a whale watching tour. The best time to see whale's in Maine are May-October. Since October is the end of the season, we weren't sure how lucky we were going to get. We booked with the Bar Harbor Whale Watch Company. Make sure that you take a good look at their page with what you're able to bring and recommendations for clothing. For us, we purchased a lunch to bring with us on the boat. We also packed lot's of layers in a backpack to wear on the boat. On land, the weather was very pleasant and we didn't need more than a light jacket over our T-shirt and shorts. On the boat however, we wore multiple jackets, a hat, and gloves. The boat tour was 5 hours long -definitely worth it- additionally, our guide on the boat was incredibly well informed and great at not only educating but answering questions as well. We saw a whale, Ditto, multiple times and got to learn a lot about wildlife in general. After we got back to the Maineland, we spent time hopping in shops around Bar Harbor.

Overall- we had a great trip and it definitely won't be my last visit to Maine.

Food

If you are a seafood lover, Maine is the place for you! Some of the must-try foods of the area are: Lobster, Blueberries, and Popovers. They even have lobster at McDonalds here!

Reservations are recommended- we weren't there during the high season and popular restaurants were booking up fast.
